I Am A New Yorker

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Major K- http://www.AshGel.com
Date: Aug 28, 2007 2:44 PM
Subject: Fwd: FW: I Am A New Yorker

Received this from my former Battalion Commander in the Reserves who was also retired from the New York Fire Department. Nice message about NYC, feel free to pass along! Even if you're not a New Yorker, perhaps you know someone who is.

Subject: I Am A New Yorker

THIS IS WHO WE ARE, NO MATTER WHERE WE LIVE!

I am a New Yorker
Photos By Papomena

I am a New Yorker
I do not live in the five boroughs or on the Island or Upstate
I may live hundreds or thousands of miles away
Or I may live just over the GW Bridge
But I am a New Yorker

I am a New Yorker
Whatever took me out of New York:
Business, family or hating the cold
did not take New York out of me.
My accent may have faded and my pace may have slowed
But I am a New Yorker

I am a New Yorker
I was raised on Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and Rockefeller Plaza,
The Yankees or the Mets (Giants or Dodgers)
Jones Beach, Rye Beach, Rockaway Beach or one of the beaches
on the sound
I know that "THE END" means Montauk.
Because I am a New Yorker

I am a New Yorker
When I go on vacation, I never look up
Skyscrapers are something I take for granted
The Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty are part of me
Taxis and noise and subways and "get outa heah" don't rattle me
Because I am a New Yorker

I am a New Yorker
I was raised on cultural diversity before it was politically correct
I eat Greek food and Italian food, Jewish and Middle Eastern food and
Chinese food
Because they are all American food to me.
I don't get mad when people speak other languages in my presence
Because my relatives got to this country via Ellis Island and chose to stay
They were New Yorkers

People who have never been to New York have misunderstood me
My friends and family work in the industries, professions and
businesses that benefit all Americans
My firefighters died trying to save New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers
They died trying to save Americans and non-Americans
Because they were New Yorkers.

I am a New Yorker
I feel the pain of my fellow New Yorkers
I mourn the loss of my beautiful city
I feel and dread that New York will never be the same
But then I remember:
I am a New Yorker

And New Yorkers have:
Tenacity, strength and courage way above the norm
Compassion and caring for our fellow citizens
Love and pride in our city, in our state, in our country
Intelligence, experience and education par excellence
Ability, dedication and energy above and beyond
Faith--no matter what religion we practice
Terrorists hit America in its heart
But America's heart still beats strong
Demolish the steel in our buildings, but it doesn't touch the steel
in our souls
Hit us in the pocketbook; but we'll parlay what we have left into a
fortune
End innocent lives leaving widows and orphans, but we'll take care of
them
Because they are New Yorkers

Wherever we live, whatever we do, whoever we are
There are New Yorkers in every state and every city of this nation
We will not abandon our city
We will not abandon our brothers and sisters
We will not abandon the beauty, creativity and diversity that New York represents
Because we are New Yorkers
And we are proud to be New Yorkers

“Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz™,” Oh What A Remake It Is!

Alka-Seltzer® Features Grand Prize Winner of Jingle Competition in National TV Ad Produced by Award-Winning Director Nigel Dick

Morristown, NJ, January 22, 2007 – The Alka-Seltzer brand, which is the antacid and pain reliever synonymous with relief, has chosen to recast its iconic advertising jingle "Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz, Oh What A Relief It Is®" with the help of the recently announced grand prize winner of Alka-Seltzer’s Battle of the Bands: Bring Back the Fizz contest and award-winning film-maker Nigel Dick, with Hollywood-based production company DNA. Josh Anderson won the brand's national contest to remake the classic jingle and will now be featured in a national TV ad, which was directed by Dick and is scheduled to air during the pre-game of the big game on February 4th.

British born film-maker Dick has directed over 280 music videos and 22 documentaries and feature films winning him three MTV awards, two Billboard Awards and three Music Video Production Association awards. The enormous list of artists he has worked with includes The Backstreet Boys, Toni Braxton, Good Charlotte, Green Day, Elton John, Ricky Martin, Paul McCartney, Amy Lee (Evanescence), Tina Turner, Celine Dion, R.E.M., Gloria Estefan, NSync and Ozzy Osbourne. “I am excited to put my creative stamp on such a classic ad,” said Dick. “It can be difficult to remake an icon, but I was grateful for the opportunity to give this ad a new and modern twist.”

Alka-Seltzer and Josh fans across the United States can look forward to hearing the updated “Plop, Plop” jingle complete with a fizzy pop/rock concert scene and an amusing twist in line with the brand's predilection for memorable and often humorous advertising. For a preview of the new jingle, go to www.plopplopfizzfizz.com.

The legendary Cyndi Lauper was put in the judges chair to help crown the national winner of this contest. “It was entertaining to hear the creative ways people used song to express how Alka-Seltzer means relief,” said Lauper. “Josh’s jingle was chosen because he has a great voice and submitted original lyrics consistent with Alka-Seltzer's indications for fast relief.”

Anderson beat out hundreds of other entrants and was selected as the national winner from a group of four finalists, including winners from the live events in Philadelphia, Dallas, and Atlanta. As a radio personality at 107.5 KZL in Greensboro, North Carolina, and surrounded by music all day, he was inspired to put pen to paper and sing about relief.

"I think my jingle reminds people how accessible relief from pain and indigestion can be," commented Anderson. "I tried to write a catchy tune with a comedic hook, and one that could be as memorable as the original."

Anderson’s lyrics include: When pain and indigestion seem to have their way, I unleash the beasts from the foil sheaths and everything’s okay… Plop, plop, fizz, fizz. Oh what a relief it is, Such an easy thing to do, all those bubbles to the rescue.

This competition is part of a year-long celebration of Alka-Seltzer’s 75th Anniversary.

Iconic Jingle Sings a New Tune

“Plop, Plop” is the third commercial remake of Alka-Seltzer’s iconic advertising over the past year, but the only one that tapped into the creative juices of Americans.

The original “Plop, Plop” jingle was written in 1953 by Paul Margulies, father of actress Julianna Margulies (of TV show ER fame). The tune did not hit the airwaves until 1975, when Speedy Alka-Seltzer first sang it. Three years later, Sammy Davis Jr. gave the jingle his touch when he made two covers, one “Rock” and the other “Big Band,” and performed them on “The Frank Sinatra Show.” The original jingle, simply: “Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is!!” was ranked by Ad Age as one of the top 15 advertising campaigns of all time.

Terk HDMI-31 Smart HDMI Switch (3 X 1)

So you want to connect multiple HDMI components to a single HDTV....What now?

So you have multiple HDMI sources but only a single input on your HDTV. What are you going to do now gadget guy?

Or you have an older (ancient) A/V receiver that lacks HDMI connections.... Or you have an HDMI receiver, but you just need more HDMI inputs. For each one of these problems, an HDMI switcher is a reasonable solution. A switcher (or just "switch") lets you toggle among as many as four HDMI inputs with the simplicity of the touch of a button.

It is my humble opinion as a gadget guy that the Terk HDMI-31 Smart HDMI Switch (3 X 1) fits the bill for this dilema.

It automatically switches when you turn a product on, it's compatible with all High Definition resolutions, and it's compatible format support is DVI and HDCP.

Order this and watch the Soprano's in High Def and Fugghedbout it...

Baked Flounder With Vegetables

I got my Mom to come over and whip up a flounder dish for myself and the kids while my wife was travelling....I'm good with cooking steaks, but when it comes to fish I'm lost.

Here is what she made:

Baked Flounder With Vegetables

Ingredients

• 1 pound flounder fillets, cut into serving-sized pieces.
• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
• 1 cup onions, sliced
• 3 cups zucchini, sliced
• 1 cup green peppers, sliced
• 3/4 cup chopped tomatoes
• 3 tablespoons dry sherry (optional)
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon ground basil
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
• 1 dash hot pepper sauce
• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Place fillets in a layer in greased 9-inch baking dish. Saute onion, zucchini and green pepper in oil until crisp-tender; spoon over fillets. Top with tomatoes.

Combine sherry, lemon juice, salt, basil, pepper and pepper sauce; pour over fillets.

Bake, uncovered, in preheated 350-degree oven for 25-30 minutes. Remove vegetables and fish to heated platter. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Serve over rice. Pour pan juices over fish and vegetables if desired.

Tea Time

Tea Selection

I'm coffeed out...I have drank my fair share of coffee over the years, and I'm (for a while at least) done with coffee. The fact that Starbucks can sell a cup o'joe for close to five bucks doesn't make it sit any better with me. I've decided to give tea a whirl and explore flavors, choices, styles, etc.

Right now I'm partial to the black teas. I really want to understand the differences and nuances of black teas first before experimenting with the world of herbal teas.

So today as I stared at the tea section at my local supermarket, I walked away with a box of Bigelow's Constant Comment and Twinings Peach flavored black tea.

As I sit typing this article I am enjoying a hot mug of the peach tea.

My reviews and comments shall soon be added to this article.

Rasam

Rasam

Recently on a mission to the Pacific, I felt a cold coming on...Which is strange cuz I don't get sick, or as I like to say, " I don't do sick."

Anyway I got sick, very sick, and because of the mission, and then the subsequent timing of the red-eye flight back to NYC, I was not able to start any antibiotics till after I returned to the east coast with a sinusitis running at full terminal velocity.

Well, I got my amoxicillian and after a couple of days of severe congestion coupled with a bout of fever induced sleep induced apnea, m sickness started to turn an upward trend in feeling better. However, I was still congested, very congested.

This was when our housekeeper showed up in the evening to help out with an impending complicated morning, spying my condition, she immediately broke out ingredients to prepare an old world (South Asian Old World) remedy called Rasam.

After an elaborate method of preparation that lasted about 15 minutes, she presented me with a thin, but very dark soup that had aromas of garlic, lemon, peppers, and onions. The mere steam started to penetrate my sinuses. I took a first sip and almost could not finish the spoonful as it was way spicy. I completed that spoonful, and out of politeness endured another spicy one, and just when I thought I would not be able to endure anymore...I began lapping it all up. I finished the entire bowl, and my sinuses started to clear almost instantly. What was this soup? It's called Rasam and here are three recipes on this most amazing remedy which I now think of as a culinary delight:

Simple Rasam

Serves 4

Preperation Time 30 Minutes

Contents
Green Vegetables

Ingredients
250 gms tomatoes, quartered
1 onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, crushed
4 green chillies, chopped
1 lemon-sized ball of tamarind
1 tbsp jaggery
1 tsp mustard seeds
10 curry leaves
1 red chilli, broken into two
1 tsp coriander seeds – roasted & powdered
1 tsp cuminseeds – roasted & powdered
2 tsps peppercorns – roasted & powdered
½ tbsps oil

Recipe
1.Extract the pulp of tamarind by soaking it in a cup of hot water.

2. Boil the tomatoes, chillies and garlic in 4 cups of water.

3. Add the ground spices, jaggery and tamarind pulp and simmer for 15 minutes.

4. Heat the oil.

5. Splutter the mustard seeds.

6. Add the curry leaves, red chilli, asafoetida powder and onion and fry for a minute.

7. Pour it over the tomatoes.

8. Serve hot.

Here's another recipe:

Rasam

(Indian spicy dal soup)

The soup is traditional to southern India and can be varied with coconut, chilis, and ginger, not to mention tamarind and even asafoetida. Serve hot to 4-6 people as a first course.

Garnish: chopped cilantro

Bring water to boil in a saucepan, add the lentils, reduce heat, cover, and cook until tender, about 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a heavy pot to medium high, add the mustard and cumin seeds, and let cook until the seeds begin to pop. Reduce heat to low and cover for a minute or two. Be careful that the seeds don't burn. Toss in the quartered tomatoes, the pepper, cumin, and minced garlic and saute for a few minutes to release and concentrate flavors. Add one cup of water and salt and scrape up the pan to dissolve into the water. Let boil uncovered until the liquid is reduced by half.

Stir in the lentils, and add enough water to bring the quantity up to 6 cups. Let simmer for 10-20 minutes.

When ready to serve, whisk in the lemon juice, ladle into bowls, and sprinkle each with finely chopped cilantro leaves.

Spicy Tomato Rasam
Ingredients

2 large ripe healthy tomatoes
4 cups water or top water of boiled dal (stock)
2 whole red chillies
1 stalk curry leaves
1 tiny sprig mint leaves
1 tiny sprig coriander leaves
1-2 flakes garlic grated
2-3 pinches clove-cinnamon powder
1/2 tsp. sambar masala
8-10 peppercorns
1 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
1/2 tsp. mustard seeds
2 pinches asafoetida
1 marble sized ball of jaggery or 1/2 tsp. sugar
1 small strip tamarind
1 tbsp. ghee or oil
salt to taste

Method

  1. Put whole tomatoes in boiling water, simmer for 3 minutes, keep aside for 5 minutes.
  2. Heat 1/4 tsp. oil in a small pan, add pepper corns and 1 tsp. cumin seeds.
  3. Roast till aromatic, grind in a mortar or under a stone till powdered. Keep aside.
  4. Remove tomatoes from water, peel away the broken skin.
  5. Grate or mash till fine.
  6. To the thick pulp, add roasted whole chillies, all leaves, all masalas, salt, tamarind, jaggery and mash well either with hand or with a hand blender.
  7. The ingredients should have blended well into the pulp.
  8. Take in a deep pan, add stock or water.
  9. Heat ghee in a small pan, add mustard and remaining cumin seeds, asafoetida and allow to splutter.
  10. Add garlic and stir, add carefully to the rasam.
  11. Bring to a boil, check spices and salt and adjust.
  12. Simmer for 2-3 minutes. Keep aside covered for 10 minutes before serving.
  13. Serve hot as a soup or with steaming hot plain rice and papads.

Making time: 30 minutes
Makes: 5 servings.
Shelf life: Best fresh and hot; though masala pulp may be frozen and used later.

Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0. I soon noticed
that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot
of space and valuable resources.

In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now
monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Poker Night
10.3, Footb all 5.0 , Hunting and Fishing 7.5 , and Sailing 3.6.

I can't seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run
my favorite applications. I'm thinking about going back to Girlfriend
7.0 , but the uninstall doesn't work on Wife 1.0 Please help!

Thanks,
Troubled User.....

REPLY:

Dear Troubled User:

This is a very common problem that men complain about.

Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it
is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING
SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!! It is also
impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0 . It is
impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once
installed.

You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed to
not allow this. Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under Warnings-Mayhem/Alimony/Child
Support . I recommend that you keep Wife 1.0 and work on improving the situation.
I suggest installing the background application "Yes, Dear" to alleviate software augmentation.

The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE! b ecause
ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system
will return to normal anyway.

Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance .
Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as Clean and Sweep
3.0 , Cook It 1.5, Do Bills 4.2, and Shop 8.2 .

However, be very careful how you use these programs. Improper use will
cause the system to launch the program Nag Nag 9.5 . Once this happens,
the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase
additional software. I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0 !

WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Secretary With
Short Skirt 3.3 . This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will
cause irreversible damage to the operating system!

Best of luck,

Tech Support

Scientists speculate that the antioxidants in juice...

HEALTH & FITNESS HEALTH CHECK Robyn Shelton Robyn Shelton
Juicy news could help your brain
Published September 5, 2006

Pour yourself a glass of juice. It might be good for your brain.

A new study has found that people who drank fruit or vegetable juice at least three times a week were far less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.

Three or more glasses meant a 76 percent decrease in risk -- one or two glasses weekly led to a 16 percent reduction.

"These findings are new and suggest that fruit and vegetable juices may play an important role in delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease," lead researcher Qi Dai writes in the report, published in The American Journal of Medicine.

But why? Scientists speculate that the antioxidants in juice might prevent the brain from forming the tangled clumps of protein that are found in Alzheimer's patients.

Even so, it's too early to stock the refrigerator with those little juice boxes. Dai, who is from Vanderbilt University, says previous research on antioxidants has not found a benefit against Alzheimer's. He says more research is needed to confirm his group's findings.

The current research, which also involved scientists from the University of South Florida in Tampa, focused on nearly 2,000 Japanese Americans living in Washington state. The participants answered questionnaires about their eating and drinking habits periodically as they were tracked from 1992 through 2001 for signs of dementia.
